heritage open days
An opportunity to take in some of Southampton's history.
The Tudor House Museum and Gardens gave free admission on the Saturday.
Other usually less easily visited attractions included the world's oldest bowling green, the Southampton tram project and the steamship Shieldhall.
Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust provided free bus services between the various locations on both days as well as a city centre tour on the Saturday.

Tudor House and Garden
Dating from the late 15th century. A unique insight into the lives and times of its residents and of Southampton.

Southampton Tram Project
A group of volunteers are rebuilding tram 11. They hope to be able to rebuild number 38 as well. The Lisbon tram could be run but is not standard guage.

Also at these premises is the Dorian which is being restored by the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust.

I have photos of Southampton trams 11 and 89 taken in 1945.

SS Shieldhall
The steamship Shieldhall is the largest working example in Britain.
Starting work transporting both sludge and passengers on the Clyde, she performed a similar task in Southampton.
Shieldhall is now cared for and operated by volunteers. She makes excursions and can be hired.

Southampton (Old) Bowling Green
The world's oldest bowling green, established around the year 1299.
On the Saturday, members dressed in period costume and members of the public could try their hand at bowling. A full game was played on Sunday afternoon.

Southampton & District Transport Heritage Trust
The trust ran buses connecting the venues on both days as well as city tours on the Saturday.
Two of their buses, numbers 1 and 335, were used.
